Gala Charity Concert for Ukraine Was Held in Australia

On Sunday 17 July at the iconic Palais Theatre, Ukrainian and Eastern European cultural groups came together in a show of spectacle, dance and song to support and raise funds for war-torn, ravaged Ukraine.

The Gala Charity Concert for Ukraine featured performances from Ukrainian, Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian cultural groups. All funds raised donated to the humanitarian charity Ukraine Crisis Appeal, Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, organizers of the event, informs

“Ukraine and its eastern European neighbors understand Russian colonialism and aggression. They suffered together during the years of the imperial Russian Empire, and during the Soviet occupation of their homelands,” said Mr Stefan Romaniw, Co-Chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO). 

The concert coincided with Captive Nations Week, traditionally held in the third week of July. Sunday, July 17 also marked the 8th anniversary of the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine when 298 people, including 38 Australians, were killed by Russian forces occupying eastern Ukraine. Jane Malcolm, whose mother and step-father were killed by the downing of MH17, was present at the concert.
