Cultural Meetings About Metz and Chernivtsi Were Launched

On May 31, 2022, in the French city of Metz, Halyna Dranenko, Head of the Department of Romance Philology and Translation at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University initiated and conducted a presentation of the series of cultural meetings "Chernivtsi-Metz: kindred spirits".

The event took place within the twinning agreement between the cities of Metz and Chernivtsi, signed in April, 2022. 

The partners of the cultural event were:

- Metz City Hall, represented by Amandine Lavo Zimmerl, Municipal Councilor;

- Center of Research on Mediation, University of Lorraine (headed by Angelique Monier);

- bookstore "Around the World";

- associations "Metz Book Festival", "United with Literature" and "Exchange s Lorraine-Ukraine" (president Violeta Moskalu).

The guest speaker was Valerie Zenatti. She is the winner of many literary awards, the famous Parisian writer, screenwriter and translator. Since 2004 she has been actively translating into French the works of Agaron Appelfeld (1932-2018), a writer born in Chernivtsi. So far, thirteen translations of the novels have been published. 

In 2019, Valery Zenatti's work "Illuminated by the Light of the Living" was published, which tells about the writer's trip to Chernivtsi. This book won the France Television Literary Prize in the essay category, as well as other prestigious literary awards.

Today, Valerie Zenatti helps Ukraine both financially and morally, expressing support in the leading French media and talking about the peaceful and tolerant Chernivtsi.

At the meeting, Galina Dranenko and Valerie Zenatti also discussed the latest French translation of Agaron Appelfeld's novel "La Stupeur", published in April this year. In the form of a philosophical tale, the novel tells the story of Irina, a Bukovinian peasant woman who tries to save the family of Jewish neighbors from the Nazis during the war. The novel, in tune with current events, attracted the attention of French participants.
